Icebergs and midnight sun with Club Timmisa

This trip is a special offer for members of Club Timmisa.

The offer is valid in June, July and August 2024.

In this special offer, you can experience Ilulissat for a fraction of the normal price. Since we have seats to spare, we have decided to put together a fantastic trip for trusted members of Club Timmisa. It is a unique opportunity to experience the Greenlandic culture and nature with friends and family.

The trip is based on our traditional bestseller and the destination is the heart of Disko Bay, the city of Ilulissat. Here you can experience huge icebergs and the midnight sun at the famous Isfjord, which has earned its place on UNESCO's World Heritage List. During the trip, you will get up close to the wonders of nature along with Greenlandic culture and traditional ways of life, which exist side by side with the influence of modern life. Ilulissat is the largest sledding district in Greenland, and although there is not enough snow in the summer to go on a dog sled ride, it is a memorable experience to take the short trip out of town to experience the dogs' village, from where the 2,500 dogs provide a fantastic howling concert a few times a day. During the trip, you will stay at Hotel Arctic, which is one of the best hotels in Greenland.

There are not many places on earth that are as impressive as Ilulissat Icefjord. The icebergs simply shine in all kinds of weather. When the sun is shining, you can see the ice's many contrasts, and when the weather is cloudy, it is the blue shades that take center stage.

Experiences

The experiences are lined up in Ilulissat, and there is plenty to choose from. As the trip is booked on request, there is not a daily program with already planned options for additional purchases as with our other trips. Instead, you'll be able to read about some of the experiences in and near Ilulissat below and then arrange your desired excursions with one of our travel consultants. Note that not all excursions will necessarily be possible, as this will depend on the time of your trip.

Excursion to Eqi

When you are in Ilulissat, it is a great idea to make the trip to the calving glacier Eqi, which flows into the fjord 80 kilometers north of Ilulissat. The glacier is about five kilometers wide and is an impressive sight in itself. Even more impressive is experiencing its calving, and it does so so often that most visitors experience both the sight and the sound of this natural phenomenon. When the ice breaks off, there is a huge bang, and it is a unique experience to sit in the boat in front of Eqi and wait for large pieces of ice to fall into the water. The length of the sailing trip to and from Eqi Glacier can vary between two and five hours each way, as it depends on which type of boat is used on the day in question. The ice-safe boats lie in front of the glacier for around two hours, and in the meantime, you can enjoy the lunch served.

Go on a whale safari

Go whale watching in Ilulissat and see the majestic whales in their natural habitat. Ilulissat, known for its stunning Icefjord and spectacular scenery, offers a unique chance to get close to some of the sea's most fascinating creatures. Most visitors are surprised by how great an experience it is to get close to such a large animal. Greenland is home to many species of whales. Around Ilulissat, you will be most likely to encounter the humpback, minke, and fin whale. The whales swim around the entire Disko Bay throughout the summer, and these fantastic animals have a very special place in Greenlandic society, both in the culture and the old myths and legends. Greenland has as many as 15 different whale species that permanently live in the seas around Greenland or are on a short visit.

Sail under the midnight sun

The midnight sun is a magical natural phenomenon where you can experience the sun's warm light around the clock during the summer months. With a surreal color palette, the midnight sun bathes Greenland's icebergs and mountain peaks in a colorful glow. In addition to the golden midnight glow that creates a dramatic landscape, the midnight sun is alluring because of the high activity that occurs as the sun does not set at night. In Greenland, you have sunshine 24 hours a day, and when the midnight sun embraces the land, the boundary between day and night blurs. As a cousin to the Polar Night and the Northern Lights, the midnight sun only appears in the summer months, in the same way, that the Polar Night and the northern lights can only be experienced in the winter months.

Hike to Sermermiut

From Ilulissat, you can go on several exciting hikes, the most well-known being relatively short but still incredibly beautiful. Its destination is the former Inuit settlement Sermermiut, which is located on the north side of Ilulissat Icefjord. The first people at Sermermiut settled 4,000 years ago, and both the early Dorset culture and the Thule culture settled here once. Sermermiut was excavated in 1952 and 1983 respectively, and here the evidence for the presence of the many different cultures in the middens was found. This makes it a culturally very exciting area, but we probably cannot avoid the fact that most people come here because of the beauty of the place.

Visit The Icefjord Centre

The construction of Kangiata Illorsua (The Ilulissat Icefjord Center) began in 2019. The center opened its doors to the first guests in July 2021. Inside the center, visitors can take a journey through time in the center's large exhibition "Sermeq pillugu Oqaluttuaq - The story of ice", which is created by the award-winning JAC Studios. Here you can move through a landscape of ice flakes, where archaeological objects and films are exhibited in glass ice prisms. The Isfjord center is approximately 1,500 square meters. Around 900 square meters of the building are exhibition areas. In addition to the exhibitions, the building also houses a cinema, a café, and a shop.

The settlement Ilimanaq

You should visit this small settlement, beautifully situated on the south side of Ilulissat Isfjord. Icebergs drift past in Disko Bay, and you shouldn't be surprised if a whale flicks its tail right outside your window. In Ilimanaq, you'll find Ilimanaq Lodge, a collection of 15 luxury lodges perched on the cliffs right next to the water. In the beautiful settlement, you will also find some of the oldest buildings from the colonial era.

Hotel Arctic

Hotel Arctic has 90 rooms in different categories: suite, family, single and double rooms. All their rooms are designed and decorated with inspiration from the Icefjord and the icebergs. Rooms and suites are modernly furnished to a high international standard, where Nordic design is combined with original Greenlandic works of art. From all rooms, there is a view of the Icefjord, the busy harbor environment, or Ilulissat city.

The hotel offers free Wi-Fi in all hotel rooms, and in the reception area, they exhibit and sell high-quality handicrafts. At Hotel Arctic there are two restaurants: Brasserie Ulo and Arctic Fine Dining and Wine Bar. Gastronomic experiences prepared with love for local ingredients await you here.
